Orbital Habitat Information
This website collects and provides detailed technical information on Orbital Habitats (OrbHabs) with a particular focus
on the closed ecologies and life support systems (CELSS) they will require.
OrbHab.com is not intended as a space advocacy site - in other words there few details here intended to persuade the viewer that Orbital Habitats
are viable or worthwhile. There is also little information on costs or political/social organizational structures. This was a
deliberate decision taken in order to avoid the dilution of effort and to keep the already massive information boundary coverable by the website from
expanding even further.
As you read through the Body of Knowledge (BoK), you will doubtless notice that there are more questions than there are answers. The thinking is
that sooner or later somebody is going to want to build an Orbital Space Settlement with a functioning internal ecosystem which provides the life
support. This is a completely non-trivial problem to solve and there has been little work done on it relative to the size of the
problem. So, when such an event happens, a collection of questions to consider and an associated list of resources could be a useful starting point even if
some of them are only partially addressed.
If the questions contain discussions, theories, links to relevant research and papers then so much the better - anything which can be done beforehand
to assist the people tasked with solving the problem of Orbital Space Habitats will be helpful. To this end, the BoK offers
the ability to add to the content and the discussion. Similarly, the Papers section seeks to provide a comprehensive annotated list of links to relevant
technical documents and suggestions for new additions are warmly welcomed.
Think of this site as a moderated wiki containing cross linked technical information regarding Orbital Space Settlements. Hopefully you will consider
contributing.
