Thought the folks on these maillists would have an interest in a
discovery I made on YouTube. It's a computer animation of the inside of
the Rama object from Clarke's "Rendezvous With Rama". But the animator,
in seeking to convey the scale involved, decided to put in terrestrial
features like office buildings, roads, trees, bridges, and rivers. (The
series of structures the explorers dubbed "New York City" literally
becomes New York.) Thus, I think it doubles nicely as a preview of what
the interior of one of the larger types of space habitats might be like.
The animator is Eric Bruneton, and he has a page with a
higher-resolution version of this video, along with stills and
documentation on how he created this computer model.

Thank you very much for pointing this out. It was an inspiring
journey into a world one might wish to live in.

Hi Mike,
Fantastic animation. I have read the Rama series of novels by Arthur
Clarke and loved every one of them. I recommend them to every SF fan.
Do you know (or anyone else) if the author has tried to make this
animation as per the descriptions in the novels?
Thanks for posting this....cheers....Michel.

If you go to the animator's website (
http://ebruneton.free.fr/rama3/rama.html
) and click on "History"
(French spelling), you'll see that this is actually the 3rd generation
computer model he's produced. The earlier ones were more like the
novel's description, but a problem with the inhuman and unearthly
landscape was that the scale of it never really came across. So on this
one he added terrestrial features like trees and buildings.

Mike Combs

I've only heard of Rendezvous with Rama. What are the other titles in the series?
