It is rather annoying to go to a space settlement group and
find that all the posts are about eeevviiiillll government
vs. eeeevvviiiillll corporations and whether the socialists
(ie, not like me) or the fascists (ie, not like me) are the
ones who are ruining everything.

Oh, and my side is the only ones that can get us into space.

Hey, if I had a bag with 100 Kg of sapphire in it, how
much of that would be oxygen and how much aluminum? I
can't seem to find the answer online.

47.07 Kg would be oxygen, and 52.93 Kg would be aluminum.

This means that if you are mining the Moon, and using the
regolith to build something, you only need to mine about
half as much if you make whatever it is out of sapphire
than if you make it out of aluminum metal.

Between this and the wonderful properties of sapphire, I
hope we can figure out how to make it in Space, and in
large amounts. Vacuum vapor deposition might be the way
to go.

I guess I'm a little light on the gem literacy. What other wonderful
properties does sapphire possess? And, are you talking about
manufacturing it? Just sapphire or also ruby or other corundum. Or are
you talking about finding it and 'distilling' the oxygen and aluminum
(and trace elements) out of it?

Just curious.

AFAIR sapphire is very hard, second only to diamond, and has a high
melting point (over 2000K). Probably it will have its applications in
space colonization, but there will be other niches were the tensile
strength and malleability of metals will be desirable...

The tensile strength of Aluminum alloy 2014-T6 is
483 MPa. For Aluminum alloy 6063-T6 it's 248 MPa.
For carbon steel 1090 it's 841 MPa. For A514 steel
it is 760 MPA. For sapphire it's 1,900!

Kevlar is even stronger, and then there are things
like carbon nanotubes, if we get those working.

people: I noticed the mention of "carbon nanotube" which
I believe makes the whole Space Elevator approach
feasible. I was under impression this used the c-c bond in
diamond but just found out otherwise. Per a wikipedia site
carbon nanotube technology uses an sp2 bond similar to
that in graphite as opposed to the sp3 bond in diamond !!

Is this all elementary to the Space Elevator enthusiasts in
group? (I still favor the mass-transit space shuttle approach
