Building new living space in free space is essentially the same as building new living space on Earth -- you're building new stories, higher. How is this not a High Frontier?:

No it's not. It represents a much different--and in many ways,
lower--lifestyle for its inhabitants, than them living in single-
story buildings. Which is why...surprise...the majority of people
prefer to live in the latter.

There is also the issue the shadows that these buildings put on the
surrounding (real) land near them.

You can indeed build very tall buildings on Earth. You can build arcologies. You could, in fact, build arcologies as artificial islands in the ocean. These are all possibilities and I hope we do all of those things.

And space still provides for more room and more resources to build with (especially when you consider how much of the Earth's resources are beneath the crust, in the mantle or the core).

Where would orbiting space colonies get their nitrogen?
It wouldn't be enough just to have human waste -- we'd need inert nitrogen
in the air as well.

In the Inner System, carbonaceous asteroids, as well as incoming
comets. (In fact, the nitrogen on Earth is thought to have come from
them.) In the Outer System you have ammonia ice in many bodies, and
even free nitrogen in some (e.g., Titan).

Early on, from Earth. The mass isn't that great.

At little longer term, I believe comets have quite a bit of ammonia
(anyone know for sure)?

Ammonia from comets, then small icey moons, then large icey moons, then Venus which has 4 times the N2 in its atmosphere then Earth, and finally the ice giants Neptune and Uranus.
