Hello all,
economics can justify investment in space exploration.
It is probably true that the age of exploration was motivated by market
economics:
*The so-called Age of Exploration was a period from the early 15th century
and continuing into the early 17th century, during which European ships
were traveling around the world to search for new trading routes and
partners to feed burgeoning capitalism in Europe.*

... However, it is unlikely that human expansion into unknown territory
tens of thousands of years back was motivated by market economics. Human
populations crossed oceans breaking contact with the parent groups.
(.. The present state of market economics with growth tending to zero is
none too cheerful either?? Market economics on its own is also unlikely to
solve our environmental issues - without collective human desire to solve
the same.)

Speaking today at a gun rights rally held in Yellowstone National Park,
Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump pledged that, if elected, one
of his first acts will be to abolish the environment. The truth, my
friends, is that the concept of the environment is a socialist plot to
destroy capitalism. Trump claimed. The whole thing is a hoax. Its
garbage.

It would be unfair to pillory Trump for this comment. Economists and
Governments in general don't want to talk of the environment.

Protecting the environment and Space Exploration, both, must move beyond market economics. They are also celebrations of the human spirit.
