Re: Would it be possible to colonise the galaxy today?

I'm a student in england researching the possibility of colonising
the galaxy ad was wondering if some people could give me their views
on whether it would be possible with modern technology? If it would
be possible what constraints are there to hold people back? I hope
some people can help.

If by "modern technology" you mean exactly the technology that we have
today, then the answer is no.

On the other hand, if by "modern technology" you mean some technology that
does not exist but we know almost for sure that is possible by just
advancing current technologies, or using them in different ways, then the
answer is "yes".

But of course I am referring to the "cometary diffusion" colonization model.
Other models involving hydrogen fusion or antimatter propulsion, or even
faster-than-light travel, are either decades or centuries beyond our current
technology or are plainly impossible.

Moneey is the constraint, as in most things. Indirectly the interest people have in sacrificing money from one project to another.

The Apollo moon landing is proof that in roughly ten years time with proper funding and social incentives (desire) Man went from a ground hugger to the ability of playing golf on the moon.

Money is a limited resources. However if you consider the hundreds of thousand of un employed people in the world with the intelligence to build technologies, and how their unemployed but less mentally prepared brethern could produce farming, mining, etc. to support them,,,then it may suggest that money isn't really the problem, rather desire.

During the beginning of the second world war, the US was essentially in a depression. Number of airplanes was limited. In a couple of years time, production of airplanes was unimaginable, same with ships, tanks, etc. Such a massive and quick gearing up and solutions to problems of "money" resources etc. were overcome in short order.

Of course people were convinced they were fighting for Life and Freedom, a pretty strong motivator.

Perhaps if we discover a planet size astroid on direct course with the Earth, too large to coniser blasting or deviating, then you may see how "easy" it is to colonate the moon, mars, even venus..since there would be no alternative. As of now we arent under that pressure...(however the dragonsentering the picture may reverse that :-)

My answer to mat2011 is a set of questions:
What would possess you to want to "colonise the galaxy today" when the
Moon is right next door and there are thousands of Near Earth Objects
available for use in relative close proximity to Earth?
Are you aware that there are viable alternatives to living on planetary
surfaces? If not, then please go to http://www.ssi.org/ and order
O'Neill's book (or simply go get it at your local Barnes & Noble). We
don't have to "colonise the galaxy" in order to find quality places to
live; we can manufacture quality places to live.
There are an estimated 1.1 to 1.9 million asteroids in the Inner Solar
System. How long do you think it will take for human civilization to
exhaust that vast resource? Given your answer, is it useful to discuss
the question "Would it be possible to colonise the galaxy today?" Your
question is not a relevant question for me, nor for my children, nor for
my children's children; it is useless to discuss such things.
Are you aware that the 1.1 to 1.9 million estimate does not include the
thousands of asteroids orbiting the L4 and L5 points of the Jupiter-Sun
system (the so-called Jupiter Trojans)?
Are you aware that there is yet another 'asteroid belt' outside the orbit
of Neptune, possibly larger than the asteroid belt in the Inner Solar
System?
Are you aware that there is an "Oort cloud" of resources yet even further
out from the Sun?

Given the vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast,
vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast, vast
amount of resources in our own Solar System, why are you asking the

By the way, I forgot to mention that the "cometary diffusion" method that I
mentioned in my reply to mat2011 would take hundreds of thousands of years
to take us to the nearest stars, and hundreds of *millions* of years to
spread Humanity (or, better saying, things that descended from us)
throughout the galaxy. But hey, we will start the process the day we build
the first space settlement! ;-)

Thank you very much for your ideas.The reason I'm asking this
question is because for my studies I've been asked to research this
question and no one web site has given me a good view and I thought
this was a place where I could ask people who have a lot more
experience than I do. All these comments are very useful and I hope I
can work with them in my studies. Thank you again all of you who are
contributing.
