I know that this is very much off topic regarding this list. but some of the
emails I read got me so hot that I feel that I need to say something about me
personally.

After reading that hot speech which reminds me more of my old Christian
fundmentalist life (which is one of a reason why I quit) than anything else,
let me point out something. I was born deaf in Norfolk, VA. I know a few
people from government who are cops, navy men, contractors and Navy data
workers and most of them are in my family which is a very, very large
extended Polish (along many others) family. We all grew up as strong
anti-communists and I work on Reagan's 1984 election as 14 yr boy. The
people I know are nice, BUT from day one I always resents people who assume
that since I'm deaf, I don't know what's best for me. I refuse to play
along. One time in third grade I was transfered to a better school in
Chesterfield and the experts want to keep me back one grade "to better ground
me in our standards". I protest very strongly because I knew I was a lot
smarter than most of the lazy dumbbells I'm stuck with. But the experts were
gods and I swore to myself that I will educate myself by myself so that my
mind won't suffer from their high and mighty crap. Most of my education are
self-taught in library (very much like Tom Paine and Ben Franklin and Tom
Jefferson). I graduated from both high school and college with high grades
by the way. I was a born-again Christian in a Catholic family from 13 of age
and work with Jews for Jesus in New York City and have a lot of friends in
many denominations. I quit because I saw that much of science, history,
religious history and my observations don't match with Christian framework.
Also, I highly disliked the very extreme rants that arises from negative view
of man as brutal animal who MUST have a horse's bite in mouth at all cost
(which also make it much easier for preachers of all stripe to scare and to
control people). Such fear also limited the church people's ability to "l
ook up and see" for themselves, creating a kind of narrow-mindedness. So I
quit in disgust at such abuses. Only in the last couple of years, has I
become an atheist and businessman working on toy start-up. I did not become
anarchist until after the shock of 9/11, which took place while I was in
Midtown for eye check-up. Such a beautiful day, the sky so clear you can see
the thick, dark smoke of ashs miles away. I didn't stop to think about the
nature of state until I made sure that my favorite teacher who have a
apartment and studio a block away from WTC was safe.

So I know where you coming from and the fact is I don't agree because my
experience and thought don't match with your statment that we need big
government. The only government needed is government of self and ethics are
created by natural force of self-interest. But I do agree with you that this
is one topic that we can't agree on. This is a reason why I stress the need
for experiments because experiments already show why Communism don't work.
Also, the Third World stuff you meation don't count because you're describing
warlordism which is a rule of unlawful force that practice robbery, not a
society of contract. I use this 19th century quto from Ben Tucker with a
reason because I noticed that people confuse anarchy with lawless chaos which
is not so. It means society ordered by common law of contract between
individuals and have no king. That's what the word mean in latin: "without
king". In it the people pay freely with their own free will and not force to
hand over. You also insult people by implying that they don't know how to
solve their problem of unlawful force or another other problem and therefore
need a government supported by taxes. But, as a Christian, how do you
conrtol your gonverment when they are also "sinful men, foolish in their
wisdom"? That was what Sammuel was warning about before appointing Saul.
Anarchy is a way to create a control over the haughty men on power-trips.

Thanks for keeping cool through what was an unintentionally provocative
exchange. I am always humbled to be opposed by a correspondent who is both
well-read and determined in his views. Although there's a lot we don't
agree about, I will give you one of the highest complements in my lexicon--I
plan to go read the authors you're citing to learn more. Best of luck.

I do not think at all that this thread is off-topic. On the contrary,
discussion about how politics and society will evolve in space colonies is
an unavoidable topic. And discussing current and past politics and societies
is an unavoidable step in that process...
