Relying on my faulty memory of the past, I think the moderator has
said that issues that reflect future society within space
settlements are on topic.

I'm not quite sure how unions are tied to space settlements, perhaps
that could be brought back on topic with a short conective
statement. But future society (ORION) is on topic. Governance,
politics, economy, human condition in orbit, are all within striking
range.

Personally, I've kept my peace (surprising to some of you, I know :)
about terraforming Mars and Venus waiting for someone to tie it in
to O'Neill type settlements. But I also kept my peace about unions.
Surprisingly, those are the posts that I thought were most off-
topic. I'm right now looking at the header for this group which
states: "spacesettlers A group for people who think that space
settlements are a better option than planets for space colonization."

I'll abide by the moderator's judgement. It was nice though to see
some activity on this list.

Excuse me Michael, I KNOW I'm a newbie here, but how is ANY issue
relating to Human habitats in orbit "off topic" here...?

This is NOT a rhetorical quesiton, I'm genuinely baffled -- spike

As I said in a previous post, major forces kept me from exerting my "soft
moderation" in the last week - and in an interesting manifestation of
Murphy's Law there was a surge of off-topic or not-so-on-topic messages in
that period. I'm now trying to delicately finish or redirect threads that are
not exactly related to this group.

(On the other hand, this surge of not-so-on-topic messages is perhaps a sign
that the group members are becoming "in synch" and knowing each other better
and are willing to discuss *everything* here. That's a good thing, but it
would call for a new "spacesettlers-everything" group. :-)

My apologies... I hope that will not happen again.

Errr... My apologies, I recognize that I am overly indulgent with terraforming
messages because I think that the terraformation problem, though not
practical, is intellectually fascinating. I'll try to correct this flaw in my
character in the next terraformation messages. :-)

I think terraforming is interesting as well, on an occasional basis.

The genetics thread started off on a spacesettlers theme but we've
now gotten into the many offshoots that don't pertain to
spacesettlers all to well.

I don't see it going on too much longer. Everyone's had the
opportunity to throw their opinions into the mix, clarify
misunderstandings, and we'll all go on our merry ways, all still
holding our opinions :) LOL

I think you're right, we're getting to know each other so it becomes
easier to stray off-topic when we all get hopped up about something.

I'm sure that there are groups for terraforming and also groups for
genetics. I'm too busy to join more groups other
than "spacesettlers" and "SSI." How could anyone keep up? These two
tax me no end.

But I will say that I enjoy the depth of discussion and thought that
these groups offer compared to the signal/noise ratio of most
newsgroups. Good work everyone.
