I have a question that might help Island One gain greater economic
independence. Where do the people on Island One get their clothles and
papers there? Surely it would be too costly to import them from earth due to
the launch cost. Why can't we grow hemp for paper, clothles, bags and the
like in one of the crop lands? This simple crop can go a long way to create
a pleasurable life in the colony when we don't have to look at e-book all
time and get eye strains and get to feel the texture of paper for watercolor
landscape painting in the park. This simple feature can really enrich the
lives and add to the selling of Island One.

While we're on this subject, are there any experiment on growing plants in
space yet?

and can we make sell and do amphetamines ,to cut down on food consumption
and increase productivity by making 175 hr work weeks. as far as hemp
production, yer overlooking its oxygen ,food ,and durable reusable toilet
paper potential! love P.

correction ,bio-filter of waste water and can then be harvested and utilized
as a nutritious food stuff.

Would you really want to wear clothes made of paper or rope? I wouldn't.
Could you imagine walking around and getting Rope Burns. What's wrong with
cotton anyway? That stuff grows quickly enough. I know it doesn't look a
thing like Pot, and that's a real bummer for those people who wish to grow
the stuff on Island One. Also what's the matter with e-books? Haven't you
heard of intelligent ink? This is a sheet of paper enbedded with wires and
tiny little ball bearings that are black on one side and white on another.
There would be batteries in the back of the book and a jack for downloading
from a computer. I don't think we'll be using the glowing screens by the time
Island One is built anyway.

I don't think there will be any hippies left over to grow the stuff by the
time Island One is built.

Hello

Let's cut out the hemp talk. It seriously diminishes the credibility of the
project. You asked if anyone was doing work on growing plants in space. The
answer is yes. Me. We were operating a regenerative greenhouse to determine
what was the minimal system needed to grow food, sustain air, and still be
reasonably simple to operate.

A rumor developed among local folks that this was actually a pot farm. Our
experiments were ruined several times by break-ins and vandalism. One person
was actually arrested when he was caught stealing basil! The problems became
too expensive to handle and the facility was closed.

Don't even hint at any relationship between this work and drugs, it attracts
trouble.

In Denmark, where Cannabis is as banned as in most other countries,
there is a quite legal field of hemp near Roskilde. It is a variety so
depleted in THC that you'd have to smoke a few acres to get high.

An interesting lesson to remember. If something appears hidden, then it seems to inspire people to assume the worst possible motive. In this case I am sure that you were not hidding anything. You just didn't publize to the local yokels. If you had spent all your money on a huge sign proclaiming that you were doing advanced regenerative studies on plant growth for space science they would have decided that you were a crackpot group and left you alone.
One of the only valid reasons for Biosphere2 is regenerative environments. It is an interesting facility to visit. I would recommend it if you happen to be near that area of AZ. http://www.bio2.edu/

There were experiments in MIR. If I remember correctly the plants did
poorly. The lack of gravity confused the up-down growth pattern.

Hemp is softer than cotton while being stronger. If you are worried
about cannibus use on island one, rest assured it will show up there.
If it doesn't its to easy to make designer drugs out of household
products if you know what your doing.

Hemp is not actually the same as pot. Its a different species of the
same genus. It doesn't have the high amounts of THC in it.

Hemp is actually grown legally in Canada. It is used mostly in making
clothing and cosmetics.

Dynamac Corp., which you can learn about at http://www.dynamac.com/ , is
doing some work on growing plants in space. It is a wonderful opportunity
to learn more biology, for example they have a patent pending that could
increase potato production on Earth by 40 %. Possibly another benefit for
Earth from space initiated and based research.

This has always been the problem with the benefits from space. They
are all abstract research that show up as products totally divorced
from the space program. The average person doesn't realize how much of
the everyday products they use owe there existence to space research.
