Isn't Robert Forward the past-master of
tethers and tethering protocols; if I recall
correctly I think he even started a company with some other guy to
exploit
the potential of the tetherodynamics...

Thank you to tango man for his description of tethers. I 'm sure you've seen the website for tethers unlimited, they have on their site articles that seem to say that tui is being funded. They predict twelve or so years before a real system is deployed. I wonder, is it realistic to imagine a tether system that requires no rockets at all to reach its pickup? Rather a very high altitude capable plane? Does anyone know of other companys that have funded plans besides liftport?
