Living under the sky, all unprotected like that. No sir, that's not
for me!

I'd rather live nice and safe in a Habitat, with shielding
protecting me, and then the meteor having to go through the ground
I'm standing on to get to me, not just falling from the sky and
through my roof like on Earth.

Why they don't even have radar tracking like we do in the Habitats,
and forget about the lasers that actually vaporize most meteors
before they even get close to the Habitat.

I just don't understand how those Earthlings can sleep at night
knowing that they could be hurt by a meteorite at any moment.
They're just taking foolish risks with their lives and those of
their children. How irresponsible!

Sorry. It started out as sarcasm. I only intended to write the first
two paragraphs but then I got on a roll!

It was sarcastic from the point of view of reversing the scenarios.
You'd expect the Earth people to be leery of living in a Habitat for
fear of meteor strikes. I just wanted to turn that on its head.

When I got going though, then I started adding some real benefits of
living in a Habitat.

That's where things got a little muddy.

I think you could make a Habitat safer than Earth because the area
of the Habitat is smaller, the systems would be smaller. In the end
it probbly comes down to cost/benefit.

Thanks for the kind words. I think I've developed a filter when I
read the news, so that I see how things may relate to our interests.
I may seem prolific but I only participate in the SSI and
spacesettlers forums, where I know many of you particpate in
multiple forums, so my post's aren't diluted across many topics :)

That's interesting. I didn't know that cosmic rays were directly
responsible for putting some radioactivity in our foods. I thought
it all came from the ground.

So if we stick with the 2 meters of shielding (441 g/cm^2) we should
have a cosmic ray reading of 250 millirems, compared to 52 for
Denver and 26 for Miami. Absent 250 millrems from radon and other
Earth sources, we're better than par. But if the cosmic rays are
indeed interacting with the Nitrogen in the atmosphere, we'll have
5x the cosmic ray sources, and probably 5x the C-14. Can this be
mitigated in some way?

If we grow our food in pods with less radiation shielding, the
radiation itself won't harm the plant, but will the radiation work
its way into the atomic structure of the food, and then into our
bodies? Anyone have information on this?
