OK, that's within geosynchronous orbit and they just detected the
damn thing on Monday!
"The asteroid, 2004 FH, was expected to make its closest approach at
5:08 p.m. EST, streaking over the southern Atlantic Ocean. It should
be visible through binoculars to stargazers across the southern
hemisphere, as well as throughout Asia and Europe, said astronomer
Steve Chesley, also of JPL."

If it is coming that close to earth, I wonder if nasa
could point any of its earth monitoring satellites at
it. I for one would drool at the opportunity to get a
picture of an asteroid using a landsat bird or
anything else with a hyperspectral imager.
a GOES satellite's imager and sounder. GOES geosynch
orbit should be able to see this asteroid go between
it and the earth.
Also, it would be nice to bombard it with earth based
radar to probe the innards of the object. Ahh, to
actually have money to take advantage of such
occurances...

Just to clarify, it's a picture of a Comet (Wild-2), not an NEO.
