Hello everyone,
I'm new to this site so please forgive me budding in but I am
interested if any work has been done on small (100) person orbital
habitats. As you know O'Neil refers to a possible 150 person test
habitat with an empty mass of 130 tonnes, rotating at 4 rpm.
I've noted that SSI's work on closed life support systems
required 290 square meters per person in ploant growth area, rater
difficult to fit in a small habitat.
Oh, yes is there any news on wheather there will be a Princeton
Conference in 2005?

Oh, yes is there any news on wheather there will be a Princeton
Conference in 2005? I wouldn't count on it. Nobody on the list has been able to contact any SSI officials in quite some time, and it's not at all clear that SSI is a functioning organization at this point. Regardless of the outcome, I plan to keep the SSI Maillist going as a forum for discussion of O'Neill's work. So far, the web site is still up. I've backed up all the files. If the siteshould ever disappear, I plan to make an on-line archive of at least a portion of the site. How much will depend on how much web space I can muster up.

Silly Question, Has anyone in the US tried ringing the phone number on the
contact page ? ( http://www.ssi.org/contacting_ssi.html )

contact page ? ( http://www.ssi.org/contacting_ssi.html ) I've been trying at various times throughout the morning. I always get a rapid beep which I usually associate with a busy signal, but I'm pretty sure nobody's been on the phone all morning. I'm sure it's disconnected at this point.

---Mike, I sure hope the SSI site DOESN'T disappear.
What a shame if there are no alternatives being
offered to the planatary bias,,,
frontier on the tube, like Star Gate 1? A reality
oriented, HARD SciFi series, with some real
alternatives to accessing space, like your balloon
supported launcher. Star Gate 1 works because of the
powerful interaction between the characters, facing
rediculous obstacles, alien bad guys and the
inevitable triumph of humanity. However, as anyone who
has watched a hurricane in action, sometimes NATURE
wins. Can a story of human bias, desire for power and
the conflict with the laws of reality stand a chance
against wishful thinking???

Chip Proser is working on that idea.
If you wish to lobby the TV networks, he can help.

I just dialed the both the SSI fax number and telephone number and
they are both working fine. It is outside of normal business
hours, so I am getting the standard SSI answering machine.

That's interesting. I wonder if there is someone checking the answering machine periodically, even if there isn't an office anymore. Could be the rapid beep I kept getting is what you get when the answering machine is full.
