[luna_discussion] My project for today -- & yours too, perhaps
I'm making up a packet of materials to send to Mitt Romney care of his campaign headquarters.
These will include copies of books such as COLONIES IN SPACE & TOWARD DISTANT SUNS by Heppenheimer, THE HIGH ROAD by Bova, THE HIGH FRONTIER by O'Neill, & so on, as well as a CD-ROM (or however many it takes) with various NASA studies, conference papers, & so on which I have downloaded from the NASA Tech Reports Server, NSS Space Library, Lunar & Planetary Institute, &c. This would include SPACE SETTLEMENTS/A DESIGN STUDY, both volumes of LUNAR BASES & SPACE ACTIVITIES OF THE 21ST CENTURY, RESOURCES OF NEAR-EARTH SPACE, & so on. The physical books, though, are probably the most important, because they're the hardest to ignore. I may have to give up some of my personal copies, & buy replacements through Amazon (almost never available at local shops), but that's literally a small price to pay.
I encourage everyone do the same, & to pass this on to your mailing lists, phone trees, & other contacts. If you remember "Alice's Restaurant", three or more is a movement. Maybe if we get a hundred copies of these books floating around there, someone will read them. And eventually maybe supporting space development will cease to be grounds for ridicule in our public sphere.

I don't really want to discourage anybody from participating in the political process, but I don't see this doing any good. Reasons:
1. No staff is assigned to read this sort of stuff. I don't recall any lobbyist trying to educate anybody running for office which might be because the candidate's attention is focused elsewhere.
2. Unlike Gingrich who has managed to make constant changing of his mind a positive attribute. Romney has not managed to put the flip-flop label in the trash where it belongs and so must appear to be constant. Even if he wanted a better space program, he could not allow a perception that he has flip-flopped on another issue.
