Space Junk

Hi gunfighter,

Good idea, but do you really think there is money in
this?

The way I would go about it is to talk to the "Space
Elevator" folks. The problem of collision with space
junk is a million time worse for a tether than a small
satellite. (I said a million but I haven't done the
numbers, it may be more.)

If you're like me and don't believe the space elevator
ever will see light, then we must come up with another
idea. I have an idea for a mini-space-elevator, that
sticks up a mere 100 to 150 miles, we could probably
push it to 250 miles. It would sit on the equator and
be used to support one or more electromagnetic launch
systems, however it could also intercept space junk.

My question is, how do we know what is junk and what
is a real active satellite? And even more important,
even if we know that answer, how do we remove this
space junk catcher just when an important useful
satellite come upon us? I think we will need to
de-orbit everything that passes, unless of course the
active, useful satellite has thrusters and propellant
to avoid being snagged. But in general most US
Government agencies, and Foreign Governments, will get
mad at us for taking down their active, useful
satellites.

So to get rid of space junk is requires an
international effort and agreements. And while we
have everyone together, decide on who gets to pay for
it and how much. I don't think this will go over very
well, so perhaps we should combine it with some other
relevant international get together.

On a similar note: how are we going to convince the
communications folks that we need the 2.45 GHz band
for beaming Power from SPSs to earth? Lots and lots
of devices from Blue-tooth to cellphones and more use
this band. I was thinking to just do it and see what
happens, but after watching a movie "Whatever Happened
to the Electric Car?", I realize that it would be best
to forget SPSs until Japan puts some up, then we could
safely proceed.

Just some thoughts and opinions, 2 cents worth.
