Hi Chris,

On the contrary, Biosphere II was wildly successful.
The experiment wasn't perfect, but it was an
experiment, so the value was not in the success or
failure of the mission, but in the lessons learned.
Chief among those lessons was that one needs to let
concrete cure before building a CELSS on it; most of
the oxygen loss was due to the concrete curing while
the "bionauts" were inside.

The guys who put together Biosphere II have not been
sitting on their hands. They have just been much more
quiet about what they are doing. The experiment is
being repeated right now, but in a windowless building
(so that they can precisely meter the energy
consumption) with far fewer species and ecosystems -
and no humans inside, at least not yet.
