I think your right too. Without a financial venture to sustain space outposts, colonies, whatever, the next space program will end similar to the one in the 60s and 70s.

There are a lot of differences that could make this new space program work. Some things are Elon Musk and his Falcon 9, Spaceship-2, and advances in robotics and tele-operations, to name just a few.

I am studying Electromagnetic Launch Systems and I feel confident that such systems will be developed and built. I too am from the boomer generation and don't know how long it will take.

I hope to be presenting a poster session at the 14th International Symposium on Electromagnetic Launch Technology. The
symposium will be held June 10-13, 2008, at the Fairmont Empress,
Victoria, British Columbia. My poster session will be composed of 3 sections: 1st a description on the Superconducting Quench-gun as proposed by Dr. Henry Kolm, and proposed changes in it's size and output. 2nd a list of a dozen or so potertial customers of this service, including a consortium of Space Power Satellite manufacturers. 3rd, I illustrate the industrial supply line needed to sustain the Tele-operated construction of SPS kits electromagnetically launched to GEO and built there. There are various sizes and designes but I anticipate well over 15 GW (electric to earth's grid) added each year. And this is for the first, simplest, smallest prototype EMLS launcher.

In addition to clean (Green) power from space (at huge profits to the builders) it seams likely that the Global Warming problem can also be solved in space, but that is not a part of my presentation.

Robert Zubrin (mostly as part of an effort to encourage people to forget

about all those silly Gerard O'Neill concepts) says, ""...we will not be

led, but be followed by the entrepreneurs. .. But the trail will have to

be blazed by those who live for Hope and not for cash".

But I think he's wrong, and you're right.
