I try to explain some of these issues in a non-technical way in a short
story I wrote here -

But as others have said, you would come down in a spiral path. Air drag
is a factor. If you were a bowling ball, the spiral would be a
tightly-wound one, with many orbits (and take a long time to reach the
ground). If you were an ultra light, it would be a much more open
spiral with fewer orbits. If you were a parachutist, your path would
come closer to approaching a straight line with only a slight curve to
it.
