As you know, there is a principle refered to as "Occam's Razor"
(also known as "Ockham's Razor") which has been interpreted and
applied in numerous variations, depending on the subject at hand. Its
modern day mirror image is the sometimes tongue in cheek principal of
Murphy's Law.
From an engineering standpoint, Occam's Razor may be paraphrased as
"given equal results, the simpler solution is preferrable to the more
complex solution." Looking at the problem from the opposite end,
Murphy's law may be paraphrased as "If anything can go wrong, it will
- and the more parts there are in a system, the more likey something
will go wrong".
The off gas from a composting toilet is primarily CO2 and water
vapor. These gasses are venitlated from the compost via a vent pipe
which may be force-ventilated by a fan or, less effectively, by the
natural draft of warm, moist air rising. This off gas might easily be
piped to the agricultural (or greenhouse) segment of the colony where
they would be both beneficial to the plants and simultaneously
scrubbed of their CO2 content.
I mention all of this because I know how difficult it is to
maintain and operate a sewage collection system and a centralized
treatment process. Vaporizing the sewage and separating the
constituent parts is more complicated by orders of magnitude than the
processes we traditionally use. Additionally, a very significant
amount infrastructure is required for collection and centralized
treatment.
Having said all that, I'd like to climb down off my soap box and
pose another question: If a space colony has a population of, say
1,000 to 10,000 (a small town), will there be a "wrong side of the
tracks' where all manner of amoral/illegal activity is rampant?
