Mass drivers and mass catchers are how I imagine transportation working at the scale of the solar system: you accelerate by throwing projectiles designed for other people to catch, and by catching those that others have thrown. The reaction mass is reusable, and you don't have to carry it so you don't have to pay the rocket equation.
