I am more interested in why it would cost so much to do the program.

I suspect that we could travel in space for considerably less but the NASA
culture is not able to design low cost solutions and that its groupthink is
often moving towards sophisticated and expensive designs and technologies.

Maybe that is unfair but regardless how can we justify spending hundreds of
billions on space travel when we have a myraid of planetary emergencies.

Until we begin to better allocate funds as a species to me space travel is
just a luxury that we cannot afford.
