I posted this on my email list (not a plug, really...) but I thought it would be good here as well. On space.com, there is a good interview with Dan Goldin. I gained a bit of respect for him reading it. At least, he says what he thinks.

Aw gee. That pesky software. Always too expensive and it never works right...
What, did they have EDS write it?

Q: What are the two or three things really contributing to the projected overrun on the space station program?
Goldin: Its logistics cost, the integration costs and software maintenance. Its enormous. Much bigger than we had projected. I think all of America is learning some interesting lessons about software. Those are all contributors.
