Yes I have read a little on tethers, and sounds like they may very well be the answer to the cheap heavy lift equation.

One of the things they do fail to put out there in a lot of these tv shows like Nova is that space elevators would be pushing the limits of carbon nano tubs, in fact they are not even sure how strong they really are.

They can as of right now theories though some good news is one company or was it a University? can't remember, anyhow has figured away to link the tubes into a chain that can then in turn be spun and woven...
