Brooks, your idea works, too. Anything but throwing it away as they have planned. It's takeoff and landing that age the shuttle, not stationkeeping in space. at most a couple of micrometeoroid punches while in orbit that could be patched. Lots of room if you include the cargo compartment, lots of range given fuel. Why bring it back down and waste all that investment when it could be our first true interplanetary spaceship

I would think the best, last use for the space shuttle is to park it at ISS and leave it there for use there. Bringing a soyuz with it as an extra escape vehicle should allow for an even larger crew to reside in the ISS/space shuttle. Unfortunately I'm sure there is someone out there with the expertise to tell us why its a bad/unworkable idea.
