Either NASA or an advocacy group did a proposal of a final shuttle
mission similar to your suggestion. I do not remember its name, or
important details like that as it was two computers ago.

I seem to remember they removed the wings and vert. stablizer to
increase payload. I can't remember if the proposal was to use the
shuttle as a core of a new station (it was proposed before the ISS) of
added to one.
