As I understand it, NASA studies conducted in the early 70's indicate
that most people can tolerate rotational spins of 2 rpm or less with no
adverse effects due to the coriolis effect. Those same studies show that
a selective portion of the population can become likewise adjusted to
rotational spins of 3 rpm. Most space colony designs are based on 1 rpm
to maintain 1g.

The required rate of rotation has a dramatic effect on the diameter of a
rotating colony if 1g at "ground level" in the habitat area is desired.
At 3 rpm the "floor" of a small station need only span ~200 meters
across (about twice the length covered by the solar array truss of the
ISS) . At 2 rpm it would have to span ~450 meters. At 1 rpm a colony
habitat would have to span ~1,800 meters (over a mile across). The
difference in the amount of material needed to construct these
progressively larger facilities is immense.

I believe the studies conducted by NASA were set up in a rotating room
right here on Earth. I may be wrong about this so please feel free to
correct me.

My questions about the coriolis effect centers on the different effects
that an individual might experience if "down" is at a right angle to the
axis of rotation (as in a rotating habitat) rather than being aligned
with the axis of rotation as in earth-based experiments.

I realize that an occupant on a bicycle travelling circumferentially in
the direction of rotation would feel somewhat heavier than one who's
travelling in the opposite direction. What effect would be noticed by an
occupant moving "sideways" across the "floor" of the habitat (assuming
the floor is, essentially, a circular ribbon of constant radius inside
the torus or cylinder). Would the coriolis effect on his inner ear cause
dizziness or nausea? Would there even be a coriolis effect in this case?
Would a smaller radius of rotation and a greater rate of rotation cause
a person to get dizzy who just gets out of bed and stands up?

I suspect that the first rotating stations will necessarily be of the
smaller variety due to the sheer cost of construction. Perhaps we'll
have to wait until then to get definitive answers to these questions.
