A simple question

I quite agree. Given cheap, reliable transport to space, families and entrepreneurs will pool resources to fund an expedition to an asteroid or cometary mass with equipment that will enable them to stake a claim and found a successful colony. Electric/ion motors mounted to an external tank could be rigged to get a small group to where they could reasonably expect to be able to find asteroidal or cometary masses that could be adapted to provide living habitat and necessary resources of volatiles and minerals to homestead and survive successfully. I can see this process beginning within a couple decades, and, as experience in space grows, accelerating over a century or so, but I will be surprised if we dont have most of the solar system settled and consolidated within a couple of centuries.

There is no need for it to take thousands of years. Consider how many
people travel by plane per year. Building places for them shouldn't take
that long either, decades perhaps, but not thousands of years.
