Where have you EVER lived that that was true, cause that sure hasnt been my experience. Every apartment building Ive ever lived in was a social reacto alright, in other words, a powder keg...KA-BOOM!! Spare me PLEASE from your social reactor/powder keg. Humans have ALWAYS done better widely scattered than squashed together, the optimal Human grouping is a village, coincidentally, the perfect social unit for the Diaspora.

Good walls make good neighbors.

They already do live in the same big building. That thing over your head -- it's not space. It's an atmospheric roof -- topped by more roof. You're inside, and you've never been out -- along with 7 billion other people.
Not that it's a problem. Steven Pinker points out that despite this -- or perhaps because of it -- violence is at an all-time historical low:

The advantage of a quintillion people living together on Earth would -- or will -- be having so many creative people in close proximity. Think of it as a type of reactor -- a social reactor.
