There is a much easier way: build co-orbiting with an asteroid. There
are about 22,000 Earth crossers big enough to supply all the bulk
materials for at least one Kalpana One sized habitat.

Another possibility is to bring large numbers of small asteroids into
High Earth Orbit. This is easier to do that one might think, and then
your construction takes place with short supply lines to Earth.
