space habitats

A vision of what I work toward, Sailor! Who knows whether the real future will be anything at all like that, but IF one wants to work toward a worthwhile and meaningful goal, this is one that works! Of course, such a dream automatically posits all our groups goals already met and being far exceeded by Future Man, though we know none of the details. I can tell you that its a future I could gladly live in!

In something set three hundred years from, I have the population of Earth being less than a billion, several millions of them living live of deliberate primitiveness. People wanting to be noble savages or such. Except for the "savages," most people on Earth live in clean cities with aggressive recycling and energy from space. There are also about a billion tourists on Earth at any given time.

Most of the planet is set aside as wilderness areas and historical parks, with exacting restrictions on how many people can visit at any one time and what they can do.

The population of the Solar System is forty billion.

How much of this is realistic? What do you get when you cross an elephant with a rhinoceros?
