Might still be responding to points other than your central question, but it strikes me that as technology advances (and particularly transportation technology), global markets become more and more viable.

I'm convinced the folks who are running around crying that globalization is unsustainable are simply opponents of capitalism. Such people frequently don't give their real reason for standing in opposition to certain things, in an attempt to win people over to their cause who aren't necessarily communists or socialists.
