Philosophy behind space settlements

Dont forget, there will be ***lots**** of space settlements if there are any.

There will be failures, just as there are failures in earthly societies.

There will also be successes. The failures will tend to disappear, and the successes will grow and multiply.

Just like on Earth.

Crime can be dealt with in a number of ways. Many of the motives for crimes would not exist in an affluent society, but crimes of passion, malice, and insanity could still occur. Again, having many habitats will help.
Or widespread drug use?

Or an abusive totalitarian dictatorship rose up?
If people were unable to leave, or could only leave by outsmarting and/or outforcing the authorities, then this is a huge problem for the people living in that habitat. It isn't much of a problem for people living in other habitats, but I'll be happier if such dictatorships can be avoided.
