If a space colony becomes simply an extension of this total control, then the "inbreeding" will very likely translate to other society issues and contribute to an eventual breakdown.
Humans, no matter how much we want it, cannot stomach "perfection" for very long. The perfect home, the perfect job, where everything is in its place, or everything happens predictably eventually creates an unsettling feeling in people. We need the truly unexpected, challenges to life that make life worth living or the long haul. Without rain, thunder, lightning, and the myriad of events out of our control .... well, life gets boring.
In addition, history has shown that for every society that achieves such a high level of living standard, there is a proportionately larger part of that society that is downtrodden, to support that upper society. Whether good or bad, I cannot say. But the lesson is ... everything comes at a price, whether it is the environment, or animals, or people ... are we willing to pay the price for the "living standard", and what it does to us?
