People lost interest in the Apollo moon missions almost immediately. Apollo 13 (the third flight) was barely televised until they had serious problems. By the last couple of mission almost no one was paying attention.

About as many as will be exited by bases on the Moon or Mars a few months after they are established (baring some sort of major emergency).

The purpose of settling space isnt excitement. Save that for theme parks. Its something much deeper long term survival.
