Oh, I share your pessimism where those things are concerned. I've written before that I think there will be a broad spread of attitudes toward this. Some habitats will have easy movement in and out (maybe tourism is a chief economic contributor). Those will eventually wind up with every bad thing that Earth has. Some habitats might stringently try to keeps things out with Wildfire Lab-like protocols ("Andromeda Strain" reference). They might then live free of the common cold, but entry would be a laborious affair. Everything's a trade-off.

Sure, that doesn't sound too onerous.

Agreed you wouldn't want to if you don't have to. But it wouldn't have to be expensive if we do it as O'Neill recommended: continuous insolation with the heat radiators turned off until the interior is well above the boiling point. Of course, in that case he was only talking about the ag areas. If discussing the living areas, there'd be the complications of mass evacuation, and probably problems with furnishings and possessions.
