That's a great question. I think there was a lot of silly politics,
pundits claiming it was all a scam, and other such nonsense. Also,
there was a second mission (starting in March '94), but dispute over
finances quickly escalated to the point that management was physically
locked out, and the mission was ended prematurely (in September).
Things went rather sour after that.

The site (now operated by University of Arizona) is still doing some
research, but no longer as a closed system. But who knows? Maybe
they'll try closing it again at some point. (One can hope!)
