Here is one idea...
Have you seen the music videos
http://symphonyofscience.com/videos.html
? Together they have 30 million plus views on YouTube and I personally find them deeply inspiring. What if we could create a similar music video (probably just hire/sponsor John Boswell the creator of the symphony of science videos to create it) that would address this very disconnect? John is filled with wonder and loves science and space but doesn't have hard convictions about what the best route into space is. He did a
Case for Mars
video and would probably be open to a "Space: The High Frontier" sort of video as well.
Creating a solid music video is certainly not a silver bullet ... my group (
http://solseed.org
) hired him to create a
music video
for us and posted it on our own YouTube channel and it's been verrrrry slow to get uptake. It is missing some of the ingredients that these videos have that have been shared widely. Our video for example doesn't have any famous people autotuned in it. It also starts slowly and doesn't get to the stirring parts until about halfway through the video. So we would want to fix those mistakes on the High Frontier video. It seems like the ideal scenario would have John to creating the video to include some famous people "singing", put something funny or mind-blowing toward the beginning, and post it to his own melodysheep channel as part of the symphony of science series.
What do you guys think?
