If you wish to write your book in the spirit of this maillist your
space colonies should be predominantly habitats in free space of the
O'Neill type (i.e large spheres, toroids (doughnut shape),
cylinders).

It had occurred to me that one of his requirements, small, 1-2 man
spacecraft, might be more practical and realistic if flying between one
orbital habitat and another than if flying from one planetary surface to
another.
