The futuof humanity (in space)?

I think that artificial general intelligence is still a long way out. The
things debated in the article (chess-playing AIs, cardriving AIs, etc) are
as usual specific applications automating this or that task. And even
though if AGI comes to reality we have no evidence that it will be either
sentient or hostile - they could well be like the standard Star Trek
computers (very intelligent but obviously not sentient) or Asimovean robots
(intelligent, sentient, but with hardware limitations that keep them
benevolent).

It we come to either of the two later scenarios, then AGI will *help*
humans to colonize space, instead of taking it from us.

Sentient Robots could sow intelligence in the universe orders of magnitude faster than humans could! Is this theme covered in SF?
