I'd like to point out that a space elevator CAN be made with less than miraculous materials, but it might not be practical. What you do is you taper it. You have 1,000 cables at your GEO station, and some distance beneath that you have 999, and then 998, and then 997, and so on until at the ground you have one. Of course, you also have the same set-up leading to your counterweight. So, again, may not be practical, but it CAN be done with Spectra or Kevlar or steel or good old jute, if you use enough of it.
I'm sure somebody somewhere has done the calculations for just how much tapering you need for just which materials, and how much of each material you'd have to use. Seven hundred billion tons, anybody?
