NASA is counting on saving a lot of launch costs with SCRAM jets.
They will have to be moving supersonic before the engine will even
work. They have given a 10 year as max to build a mag-lev launch
system to act like a catapult for the SCRAM jet. The scram jet would
of course only be the first stage of the launch vehicle. It should
save a lot of money though. I believe it was supposed to cut costs by
a factor of 10.
