In the mid to late '70s, only dozens of Near Earth Asteroids were known. Now, over 1300 are known, many of which are much more reachable than the ones known in the '70s. O'Neill spent a lot of time considering Lunar sourcing of materials and the mass driver enabling technology. I suspect if he were initiating his research today, we would see a more thorough consideration of NEAs for sourcing resources. I'm not claiming that NEAs are definitely better in all metrics relative to the Moon for resourcing --- I think they both have their merits and eventually we'll utilize both --- what I am saying is that O'Neill's vision, were it created today, would be much more balanced between the Moon and NEAs as sources rather than focused on the Moon.

...A
lot of the high frontier stuff on the web and in books is now
outdated. I would like to ask Mike - and anyone else, if now is a
good time for the re-promotion of Gerry O'Neills ideas?? Should his
ideas be updated/modified. ...
