I think a far more plausible explanation for Apollo getting axed was
the fact that we were losing the war in Vietnam. From the start, the
Apollo program was about proving the superiority of Capitalism over
Communism. But when a small, undeveloped country could kick our butts
in war, technological superiority lost its luster.
