Although he attended the Naval Academy, he was unable to serve due to a
medical condition. I think he would have been touched and pleased by
this honor.

The Robert A. Heinlein Endowed Chair in Aerospace Engineering

United States Naval Academy

The Aerospace Engineering Department at the United States Naval Academy
invites applications for the Robert A. Heinlein Chair in Aerospace
Engineering commencing as early as August 2001. Created to honor
novelist Robert A. Heinlein (USNA '29), the inaugural Heinlein Chair
will provide vision and direction for the USNA's astronautical
engineering curriculum, our small satellite program, and our satellite
ground station.

The Naval Academy is an undergraduate institution dedicated to
developing our students mentally, morally, and physically for careers as
Navy and Marine Corps officers. Additional information about our ABET

Enthusiasm characterizes our students; most will fly Navy and Marine
Corps aircraft within months after graduation. Many of our graduates
ultimately serve as experimental test pilots in government and industry.
More Astronauts have graduated from our program than any other academic
department in the country. Future Navy, Marine, and civic leaders pass
through each of our classrooms.

Applicants must have a strong background in designing, building,
testing, launching, and operating spacecraft, along with demonstrated
research ability, a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, and
excellent communications skills. An earned doctorate is desirable, but
applicants with strong industrial/laboratory experience will be
considered.

research/scholarly interests and three references (with email and postal
