Nukes & solar panels

You know, but on this note, I would have to agree. Bush seems personally
predisposed to head towards nukes.... Now, is there a way to get him to
focus on wind and solar and SPS power AS WELL?

With deregulation and the power shortages, it's time to focus on ALL of the
alternatives... I know that I'm personally talking to Seattle city light
about solar programs (as are a lot of other people around...) A city or
municipal utility can run a program that funds personal home scale solar
power systems, but they can't fund an SPS. It would take a consortium of
them, and probably a big one at that.

So, I heard a while back that the Japaneese were doing SPS proof of concept
stuff.. (Launching small hardware doo-hickeys to see how much power really
gets thru, to prove the aiming technologies, all the other good stuff thats
needed...) But that was 2 years ago... Anyone know where they are at?

From the point of view of the Bush administration, building more nukes is
a
relatively easy way of meeting the Kyoto accords, without pushing the price
of
power through the roof. I wouldn't be at all surprised if at some time in
the
next year, the white house announces plans to build build more nukes. I
would
expect an announcement that the US plans to resume reprocessing, would
quickly
follow. If this happens, the attitude towards nuclear power is likely to
change
somewhat, especialy with power shortages in California. Die hard
environmentalists may soon find themselves out in the cold.
