the carbon usage is quite considerable. But this assumes that electrolysis is
the only method for producing aluminium, it isn't. Electrolysis is used on
Earth, because carbon is abundant on Earth, making electrolysis the cheapest
method of production. In space, we are dealing with entirely different sets of
materials. Volatiles are more precious than gold. Incidentaly, given the shear
number of meteor craters on the moon, and the abundance of platinum group metals
within meteoritic material, it would seem to be logical that large meteor
craters are a good place to put a platinum mine.
