Velocities greater than 50m/s may damage our robotic mass catcher. The
other problem relates to the momentum of the payloads. A 20 tonne
payload, travelling at 50 metres per second, carries a momentum of 1
million kgm/s. How do we neutralise that momentum, without consuming
large amounts of valuable fuel?
could use EMI to decelerate it. Not only would this save fuel, it
would convert the kinetic energy into electricity. This benefit has
to be weighed against the complexity of either making new EMI cages
for each payload or sending the cages back to the moon.
