Many communities on Earth are not within easy reach of most of these luxuries.
I have a friend who lives on Guernsey in the English channel. The island is
perhaps 10 miles square and is not within easy reach of mainland Britain or
France. One might imagine that such a place would be considered highly
undesirable, to rich or famous people. The opposite is actually true. Many
people are extremely fond of the village atmosphere of the island. It is a
highly desirable holiday destination, has its own distinctive way of life and
many people choose to make it their home. One of the complaints that many
British people have, is that the advent of motorways and modern rail networks,
have effectively dispersed the population, destroying small village communities.
