Not to belabor the point, but "dumb mass" for shielding from cosmic rays and solar proton events could also come from a mass driver on the Moon, and like the fuel could be joined with the Mars Direct space craft in orbit. And again, a win-win argument is needed and I think we have to stay with that and not close off discussion with other, maybe even dumb, space enthusiasts.
