better still use the pellet as just the first stage
of mometum transfer, move the pellets thru after they
have been shoot out of the massdriver to an area where

intense light from a laser or even concetrated
sunlight
would vaporize it into charged plasma which the ship
could push off again using an expanding magnetic
field.
it seems with a little modification the pellet no
langer becomes a problem.

The benefit of using a mass driver is that it provides a low tech, low
cost mechanism of propulsion. R&D costs are virtually zero and you can use
anything as fuel. Ion and plasma based propulsion systems are significantly
more complex than mass drivers and in order to form a practical propellant,
a substance must have a low first energy of ionisation, hence Xenon,
mercury and Caesium, etc.
